Led by Norman & Sr Teachers | Sutras From The Old Way

Our topic for seminar from July 12 – Aug 23 will be “Sutras from The Old Way,” a short compendium of suttas from the Pali canon collected and introduced by Norman. These are suttas that have particular relevance for our Zen practice. We’ll read and discuss these clear and simple teachings.

At the first seminar of this series, on July 12, Norman will talk about what is said to be the Buddha’s first sermon, Turning the Wheel of the Dharma sutta. The following week, he’ll speak about The Parable of the Saw. Following this, on July 26, he’ll speak on The Elder Sutra and the Sutra on the Better Way to Live Alone.

During the month of August we’ll hear from our priests: On August 2, Neal Shorstein will speak on Kaccayanagotta Sutra; August 9, Jeff Bickner on the Meghiya Sutta; August 16, John Murray on Those of Kesaputta; and August 23 Mary Ann Sacksteder on Simile of the Snake.

About Dharma Seminar

The evening begins with a period of zazen followed by lecture and small and large group discussion. The topic of seminar typically centers on a classical text, sometimes with additional readings, and changes every month, for the most part. The emphasis is always on the application of the teachings to our daily lives. Students are asked to attend all meetings in a given month, if possible.

Attending at the Community Congregational Church in Tiburon

Please arrive early with time to settle in. Chairs are provided. If you prefer to sit on a zafu, please bring your own.

Attending Online

Please enter the Zoom seminar room in time to settle into your seat for zazen. We encourage you to join with your camera on and to sit in front of your camera or nearby, with downcast or closed eyes as we do in the zendo. But you are welcome to leave your camera off if that’s more comfortable for you.

Please remain muted unless you have been invited to speak during group discussion and in the breakout rooms for small group discussion.

Please join in the chants with your mic off and follow any links or instructions shared in the group chat by the Zoom host.
