Dharma Seminar: August – Sept

September 27, 2023 @ 5:00 pm - 7:00 pm PDT

Led by Norman & Jaune | Dōgen on the Environment

Starting Aug 30, we will begin a series of seminars studying Dōgen on the environment: a chance for us to be mindful about our mother earth and her challenges.

Our text will be Dōgen’s “Keisei Sanshoku” (“Valley Sounds, Mountain Colors”) from the Shobogenzo (fascicle 10 in the Kaz Tanahashi edition).

Note: In September, we begin a new routine for dharma seminar. The last meeting every month will be hybrid. Otherwise, seminar will be held online in Zoom, only, with no in-person meeting.

So, Aug 30 is hybrid; Sept 6,13,20 will be online only; and Sept 27 will be hybrid. We will continue this pattern indefinitely, with the last Wednesday of the month hybrid and all other weeks online only.

Sept Schedule

Aug 30: Introduction, with odes by sangha members | Hybrid
Sept 6: Led by Norman | Online only
Sept 13: Led by Jaune Evans | Online only
Sept 20: Led by Norman | Online only
Sept 27: Led by Norman | Hybrid

To Attend In Person

Going forward, seminar meets in person on the last Wednesday of the month, only, when the format will be hybrid. Otherwise, seminar will be held online in Zoom, only, with no in-person meeting.

Registration is no longer required to attend in person. However, all in-person attendees are expected to review and follow our current Covid protocol.

About Dharma Seminar

The evening begins with a period of zazen followed by lecture and small and large group discussion. The topic of seminar typically centers on a classical text, sometimes with additional readings, and changes every month, for the most part. The emphasis is always on the application of the teachings to our daily lives. Students are asked to attend all meetings in a given month, if possible.

Attending at the Community Congregational Church in Tiburon

Please arrive early with time to settle in. Chairs are provided. If you prefer to sit on a zafu, please bring your own.

Attending Online

Please enter the Zoom seminar room in time to settle into your seat for zazen. We encourage you to join with your camera on and to sit in front of your camera or nearby, with downcast or closed eyes as we do in the zendo. But you are welcome to leave your camera off if that’s more comfortable for you.

Please remain muted unless you have been invited to speak during group discussion and in the breakout rooms for small group discussion.

Please join in the chants with your mic off and follow any links or instructions shared in the group chat by the Zoom host.
