Dharma Seminar: On Summer Break

Weekly seminar study resumes August 14 when Norman will lead us in reading Dogen’s fascicle on “Birth and Death,” from the Shobogenzo. This will lead into a 5-week seminar series led by Jaune on The Five Remembrances, teachings from the Pali Canon, beginning the following week.

Class: What Is Zen?

Led by Everyday Zen priests, teachers, and Jukai ordinees, this new class, “What Is Zen?,” meets on alternate Mondays through August. This introductory course, based on the book What is Zen? Plain Talk for a Beginner’s Mind by Norman and Sue Moon, is designed for new and seasoned practitioners alike. To learn more and to register, please see the class web page.

Jan Chozen Bays, Roshi on Zenshin, the first Buddhist nun in Japan

On Saturday, July 20, Reverend Jan Chozen Bays, Roshi, will offer a talk on the life of Zenshin, a woman whose early experiences with Buddhism amidst adversity helped shape the spiritual landscape of Japan. This talk is offered online and organized and hosted by the Soto Zen Buddhist Association. Please note, there was a typo on the date of this talk in our newsletter. The correct date is July 20.

When You Greet Me I Bow

Norman’s most recent dharma book is a collection of essays, When You Greet Me I Bow: Notes and Reflections from a Life in Zen. Edited by Cynthia Schrager, the essays span a life of inquiry into Zen practice, relationship, cultural encounter, and spiritual creativity.

Support the Everyday Zen Foundation

Dana, in Sanskrit and Pali, means generosity, or the practice of giving. In this spirit, Norman makes his talks available for download through this website for no charge other than a suggested donation, and all Everyday Zen workshops and retreats are offered at the lowest possible cost.

Please help if you can. We welcome financial donations of any size, at any time. We also encourage Norman’s students to consider making recurring monthly donations, which help generate a regular and reliable income to support Norman’s work and livelihood.
