Juneteenth is a day of celebration of freedom, honoring African American culture and achievements. It is America’s second independence day, June 19, 1865, when the last enslaved African Americans were finally informed of their freedom. Even though slavery had ended more than two years before when the Emancipation Proclamation was signed, 250,000 African Americans in Texas had never received the news, until two thousand Union troops arrived in Galveston, Texas to announce their freedom.
We will offer a brief honoring ceremony at 8am on June 17, 2024 (same zoom link as the 7:30am sitting) which will include bowing and chanting “For All Beings,” written by Zenju Earthlyn Manuel.
