A Celebration of Philip Whalen’s Zen Journals and the San Francisco Renaissance
Step into a world where the spiritual meets the literary, where Zen and poetry intertwine to tell the story of a remarkable figure in American letters. Join the San Francisco Zen Center in celebrating the publication of Bowed Some, Chanted a Little: Philip Whalen’s Zen Journals and the San Francisco Renaissance, lovingly edited by Zen student and literary scholar Brian Unger, a friend and student of Philip Whalen.
This event promises an intimate reflection on Philip Whalen, an influential poet, Zen Buddhist priest, and pivotal figure in both the Beat and San Francisco Renaissance movements. As we explore the treasure trove of Whalen’s literary journals, attendees will gain a deeper appreciation of his unique contribution to 20th century North American poetry and his innovative bridging of East Asian literature and spirituality with Western sensibilities.
We are honored to have former San Francisco Zen Center Abbot Norman Fischer — a poet in his own right, Philip Whalen’s literary executor and great friend — share insights into Whalen’s legacy and the significance of his literary journals.
Jane Hirshfield — an eminent American Buddhist poet who trained at SFZC and another close associate of Whalen — will join us, expressing her joy over Philip’s enduring visibility and the hope that younger generations continue to discover his genius.
Bowed Some, Chanted a Little is more than just a book; it is a beacon, illuminating Whalen’s pioneering journey and the profound depth of his work. This event offers an exceptional opportunity to dive deep into the intertwining worlds of Zen and poetry and celebrate a legend’s remarkable legacy.
