Dharma Seminar: Practice Period

March 15, 2023 @ 5:00 pm - 7:00 pm PDT

Hybrid Hybrid Event

Practice Period Topic: Śūraṅgama Sutra

Our seminar topic, from February 1 through the end of the Practice Period on April 8, will be the Śūraṅgama Sutra

Seminars will be led by Norman and Shuso Neal Shorestein. Neal will give his first seminar talk on February 22 and his second talk on March 15.

The primary translation that will be used is The Surangama Sutra – With Excerpts from the Commentary by the Venerable Master Hsuan Hua (New edition) available for purchase from the Buddhist Text Translation Society. It is also available as a free PDF from grandsutras.org.

For a more accessible and contemporary entry into the text, Norman recommends That Is Not Your Mind! Zen Reflections on the Surangama Sutra by Zen Teacher and neuropsychologist Robert Rosenbaum, with forward by Norman.

The text will be studied and practiced as a springboard to contemplating its direct relevance to everyday practice.

We’ll continue meeting 5:00 – 7:00 pm (PT) both face-to-face at the Community Congregational Church in Tiburon and on Zoom.

To Attend In Person

Registration is no longer required to attend in person.

About Dharma Seminar

The evening begins with a period of zazen followed by lecture and small and large group discussion. The topic of seminar typically centers on a classical text, sometimes with additional readings, and changes every month, for the most part. The emphasis is always on the application of the teachings to our daily lives. Students are asked to attend all meetings in a given month, if possible.

Attending at the Community Congregational Church in Tiburon

Please arrive early with time to settle in. Chairs are provided. If you prefer to sit on a zafu, please bring your own.

Attending on Zoom

Once you have registered (see above), you will be sent a confirmation and also a reminder email with the Zoom login information each week 24 hours before the event begins. When a new month or topic begins, you will need to register again to receive the reminder emails.
