Topic: Exactly As Those Of Old: Being With All Buddhas and Ancestors

Those who in past lives were not enlightened will now be enlightened.
In this life, save the body which is the fruit of many lives.
Before buddhas were enlightened, they were the same as we.
Enlightened people of today are exactly as those of old.

.…one never fails to receive profound help from all buddhas and ancestors.

— Eihei Koso Hotsuganmon, Great Ancestor Dogen

Everyday Zen’s April 2022 Dharma Seminar with Chris Fortin and Jaune Evans will include stories of the Buddha’s forty-five years of teaching – “a vow and blueprint for his ministry – how women and men, lay and ordained, would become wise and accomplished through his teachings,”[1] and a continuing journey through time in our ancestral lineage and “humanely entangled”[2] practice of compassion and wisdom, form and emptiness.

Our exploration and study into the lives of various practitioners, past and present, may reveal some of “the farthest reaches of causes and conditions…confessions and repentances…the true mind of faith, the true body of faith.”[3] We will discuss some recent changes occurring in Buddhist practice communities as local, national and global awareness of racial, social, economic and gender injustice and inequity turns the Dharma Wheel. This study of our lineage will examine collective and collaborative models of leadership and relationship exemplified in the teachings of Mahapajapati and other Ancestors, known and not-so-well known.

About Dharma Seminar

Everyday Zen’s Dharma Seminar meets weekly on Wednesday evenings. The evening includes a period of Zazen followed by lecture and small and large group discussion. Our study is usually centered on a classical text, changing more or less each month; the emphasis is always on the application of the teachings to daily life. Norman leads seminar most weeks with senior teachers filling in when he is away. Students are encouraged to attend all seminar meetings in a given calendar month. To receive information on upcoming seminars, please subscribe to the Everyday Zen News & Events mailing list and watch for monthly emails near the start of each month.
